Homosexual Tolerance in Schools

Welcome graphic

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “Tolerance” is defined as the capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others (6).  This doesn’t seem too difficult; actually it seems rather simple.  It is a very simple concept of accepting everyone as they are, even if they look different, talk different or even love different that yourself.  This idea of tolerance, though simple, is often hard to come by, especially in an unexpected place: schools.  For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) students, going to school on a daily basis can mean dealing with cruel harassment from fellow students and absolute apathy from teachers and administration when this harassment is brought to their attention.  This is a hostile and dangerous environment for LGBT students, but also affects those heterosexual students by making it a very negative and intolerant atmosphere.  In the face of this hostile environment, there are many programs and changes a school could put into affect.

Out! Loud! Proud!
